Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.


"Records of certain sensitive species may not appear here during the breeding season, unless publicised by site managers or where records relate to what are likely to be passage migrants or wandering non-breeding individuals rather than breeders. Species that this generally applies to include (but are not necessarily limited to): Avocet, Bearded Tit, Bittern, Black-necked Grebe, Cetti's Warbler, Garganey. Goshawk (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Honey-buzzard (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull, Nightingale, Peregrine (except for Nottingham City Centre), Raven, Red Kite and Woodlark (except from Budby Heath). For a range of other species, we will not include specific breeding information - this includes Barn Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Little Ringed Plover, Nightjar, Turtle Dove and Willow Tit. Nevertheless, please submit your sightings anyway."

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Yellow-legged Gull [adult], GBBG [adult], 200 LBBG, 40 Herring Gull, 600+ Common Gull, 450+ Black-headed Gull [Bellmoor Lake mid-afternoon]. Also 2 drake Goosander, Goldeneye, Grey Wagtail, 4 Redpoll, 2 Siskin.

Monday 26th November

Netherfield Lagoons - c.280 Pink-footed Geese [c.185 in three skeins heading east 13:12 to 13:20, 94 in two skeins heading east, 15:18], 5 Whooper Swan [2 adults/3 juveniles, still present feeding on the Seven Trent field, relocating to the large gravel pit at dusk].

Kilvington Lakes - Short-eared Owl [still present over rough grassland to the west of West Lake, late afternoon], 350 Pink-footed Geese [heading east], 6 Goosander [West Lake].

Thoresby Park - 2 Raven [over the west end of the park, 14:26], 2+Pink-footed Geese [over west 16:47, heard only], 2 Tree Sparrow [on feeders], Grey Wagtail.

Blidworth - 62 Pink-footed Geese [flew over Blidworth Woods, 12.55 heading east].

Netherfield Lagoons - 9 EURASIAN WHITE-FRONTED GEESE [still on the Large Gravel Pit late afternoon], 2 Whooper Swan [feeding on the Seven Trent field opposite the Large Gravel Pit], c.8000 Starling [arrived but dived straight into the reed beds, 16:00].

Thoresby Park - 18 Brambling [flew south over the park this evening], 3 Tree Sparrow [on feeders].

Bilborough - 4 WAXWING [feeding on rowan in grounds of Woodlands Special School, 14:30 at least].

Kirklington - 2 Raven [over Dukes Wood], 12 Goosander [Kirklington Lake].

Erewash meadows - GREAT WHITE EGRET [still on Brinsley flash, and apparently it's been present all week]. Also Goosander [redhead, Brinsley flash].

Besthorpe NR - GREAT WHITE EGRET [Mons Pool, then what was probably a second bird at Meering, 12:25].

Collingham Pits - GREAT WHITE EGRET [on Wharf Pit, 09:43].

Budby Pumping Station - 65 Pink-footed Goose [flew north-west at 09.30], 2 Water Rail, 2 KITTIWAKE [adults flew east at 10.00], 5 Common Snipe, 1 Brambling, 12 Lesser Redpoll, 3 COMMON REDPOLL [in bushes briefly with Lesser Redpolls before flying off east at 10.50].

Idle Washlands - drk Pintail, Goldeneye, Marsh Harrier, 2 Dunlin, 2 Ruff, 4 Redshank, Green Sandpiper, 2 [Slaynes Lane, this morning].

Thrumpton/Barton in Fabis - 7 Whooper Swan [6 adults, still present within Mute Swan herd, 08:45. SK511329], Green Sandpiper, 2 Stonechat [A453 Balancing Pond].

Langford Lowfields - 2 GREAT WHITE EGRET [flew north, 08:35], 39 Pink-footed Geese [flew west], 7 Goosander [flewsouth], Peregrine [over], BEARDED TIT [several heard from the Boardwalk] 2 Stonechat ]pair by boardwalk].

Saturday 24th November

Netherfield Lagoons - 9 EURASIAN WHITE-FRONTED GEESE [5 adults, on the large gravel pit late afternoon]. Also 5 Whooper Swan [2 adults and 3 juveniles].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - c.120 Pink-footed Geese [Neatholme Lane over at dusk], Whooper Swan [heard only, some in flight, thought to land on Clayworth Common], Barn Owl [flushed from under the Neatholme bridge], 3 Short-eared Owl [Tiln North between 14:50 - 15:30], Dunlin, Common Redshank [Chainbridge Scrape east, 14:30].

Kilvington Lakes - Short-eared Owl, Barn Owl [hunting over rough grassland to West of West lake, late afternoon].

Langford Lowfields - GREAT GREY SHRIKE [seen briefly four times in area of scrub west of Phase 1, this morning], GREAT WHITE EGRET, BITTERN [Phase 1, this morning], BEARDED TIT [several heard calling from the boardwalk], 5 Whooper Swan [Phase 3, late afternoon].

Bole - 90 Pink-footed Geese [heading south-east, 11:45].

Thrumpton/Barton in Fabis - 7 Whooper Swan [6 adults, still present within Mute Swan herd, late morning. SK511329], 2 Ruddy Shelduck [flew over Trentside], 2 Raven [over Branshill Wood], 2 Stonechat, 10 Grey Partridge [A453 Balancing Pond].

Netherfield Lagoons - c.8,000 Starling [roosted in the Slurry Lagoon reedbed, this evening].

Bilborough - 6 WAXWING [at least six in Rowans on Beechdale road, this afternoon], 6 Rose-ringed Parakeet [flew over the council depot, this morning].

Market Warsop - 2 WAXWING [in Rowan on Lea Road, then flew south-east].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 3 Short-eared Owl [Tiln North, viewed from the river bank, 15:20, single showing well late afternoon], MEDITERRANEAN GULL [adult, in the Bellmore Lake roost, 15:15], 30 Red-crested Pochard [Doughtys Pond, 15:25], BITTERN [Chainbridge Pit, 11:15].

Bestwood Country Park - Common Crossbill, Raven [from the quarry between 14:00 - 16:00], Merlin [flew down the hedgerow of the horse paddock, downslope from disused Childrens Playgound]

Cropwell Bishop - 4+WAXWING [in hawthorn hedgerow Bordering the Seven Trent sewage treatment works, NG12 3DD, 15:00 - 15:30 at least].

Langford Lowfields - GREAT GREY SHRIKE [showing well in tree tops at Silt Lagoons 3 and 4, 12:00].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - GREAT WHITE EGRET, 3 Pintail [Neatholme scrape, 13:45].

Hoveringham - 5 BEWICK'S SWAN [2 adults and 3 juveniles briefly on the Railway Pit, arrived from the north 10:10 and were present for less than a minute before departing north-west]. Also GREAT WHITE EGRET, 20 Siskin.

Compton Acres - 8 Whooper Swan [over South, 09:55].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Red-necked Grebe [still present on Neatholme Pit, this afternoon], 2 Pintail [Neatholme Scrape], Merlin [male, Chainbridge Scrape West].

Erewash Meadows - GREAT WHITE EGRET [still present on Brinsley Flash], 2 Raven [over this afternoon].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Red-necked Grebe [still present on Neatholme Pit, 13:22], Marsh Harrier [male, over Neatholme Scrape this morning, Chainbridge Scrape East, 14:25], 3 GREAT WHITE EGRET [Bluebell Fishery, Neatholme Pit, Chainbridge Scrape], 2 Short-eared Owl [Tiln North, from 15:30], 2 Green Sandpiper [single Neatholme Scrape, one calling, Tiln North], Cetti's Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff [Bellmore Lake].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - White-winged Black Tern [juvenile, on Chainbridge Scrape 07:10 - 07:30, then flew north-west], Red-necked Grebe [still present on Neatholme Pit, 09:35]. Also on site 3 GREAT WHITE EGRET, c30 Whooper Swan, Cetti's Warbler, Water Rail, 75 Pink-footed Geese [over Chainbridge Lane].

Besthorpe Nature Reserve - GREAT WHITE EGRET [late afternoon].

Erewash Meadows - GREAT WHITE EGRET [flew over the kennels, 13:30, present on Brinsley flash, 15:30 - 16:15 at least].

Langford Lowfields - DARK-BELLIED BRENT GEESE [Phase 3, 12:08 at least], 2 Pintail, 3 Ringed Plover, 10 Dunlin, Green Sandpiper, 2 Yellow-legged Gull [Phase 3], GREAT WHITE EGRET [Phase 1, 10:00], BEARDED TIT [heard calling by sluice outfall at south end of reserve], Stonechat.

Collingham Pits - SPOTTED REDSHANK [still present on Ferry Lane Lake, 09:24 at least].

Hoveringham - 2 GREAT WHITE EGRET, Short-eared Owl [Sailing Lake, this afternoon], CASPIAN GULL [adult present in the Sailing Lake roost].

Netherfield Lagoons - 10,000+ Starling [into roost in the Slurry Lagoon reed-beds this evening].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Red-necked Grebe [still present on Neatholme Pit, viewed from the bench, 13:30], Short-eared Owl [Tiln North, hunting along the south end, 16:30].

Thorseby Park - 5 Brambling [over south, 12:08], Peregrine [over Thoresby Lake, then flew north, 14:20]. Also Raven, 12 Meadow Pitit, Grey Wagtail.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 60 Golden Plover [Clifton Pit, midday], Stonechat [from Kingfisher hide], 7 Tree Sparrow, 27 Goosander, Water Rail, 400+ Lapwing, 12 Common Snipe.

Clumber Park - COMMON REDPOLL [ringed this morning], 2 Little Egret [between engine hill car park and the weir, this morning. Still a very scarce bird at this location].

Hoveringham - 2 CASPIAN GULL [adult, first-winter in the Sailing Lake roost, this afternoon], Short-eared Owl [Sailing Lake], Redshank, Green Sandpiper.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 2+Short-eared Owl, 6 Common Snipe [Tiln North, 15.00 – 16.30 at least], Merlin [Hayton Common, 15:12], 3 GREAT WHITE EGRET [2 Chainbridge Scrape, 14:30, third flew into the Conservation Lake from the east, 14:50], 5 Whooper Swan [Chainbridge Scrape, 14:30], Red-necked Grebe [still Neatholme Pit, 13:20].

Sibthorpe/Shelton - Red Kite [ranging over the Sibthorpe/Shelton area, 12:00 - 14:00].

Osberton - Raven [on the Osberton estate, this afternoon].

Carburton - 4 Whooper Swan [with 2 Mute in field opposite the pull-in alongside Carburton Upper Lake].

Budby Pumping Station - 6 Whooper Swan [flew over south-east, 08:00].

Saturday 10th November

Erewash Meadows - GREAT WHITE EGRET [on brinsley flash 14:00 - 16:30 at least]. Also 2 Shelduck [flew over river and landed on Derbyshire side, mid-afternoon].

Netherfield Lagoons - c.6,000 Starling [roosted in the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed, this evening].

Collingham Pits - SPOTTED REDSHANK [still present on Ferry Lane Lake].

Thoresby Park - Peregrine [over north near Thoresby lake, 14:56], 10 Tree Sparrow [on feeders].

Thrumpton - 18 Whooper Swan [1 juvenile, still present feeding on Rape field with 51 Mute Swan between Thrumpton/Barton in Fabis SK511329, 12:10 at least].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Glaucous Gull [second-winter, Bellmore Lake on island with other gulls by the visitor centre, 10:00], 5 Yellow-legged Gull [4 adult, single first-winter Bellmoor Lake, late afternoon], GREY PLOVER [flew over Chainbridge Pit, 09:53], GREAT WHITE EGRET [on small lake between IVNR And Chainbridge Lane next to river Idle], 3 Common Snipe, 2 Pintail, 2 Barnacle Geese [Chainbridge scrape].

Netherfield Lagoons - c.3,000 Starling [roosted in the Slurry Lagoon reed-bed, 14:10]. Also Peregrine.

Idle Washlands - drk Pintail, 250 Golden Plover, 13 Redshank, Curlew, Corn Bunting [Slaynes Lane, this morning]. Also 2 Dunlin, Redshank, 2 Ruff [Newington Flash, S.York's].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Jack Snipe [still Bellmore Lake, viewable from the metal bench, 16:30].

Bestwood Country Park - 3 Common Crossbill [flew over the quarry area]. Also good numbers of Lesser Redpoll, Linnet and single Raven from the Quarry site.

Stoke BardolphCommon Sandpiper [on Bulcote side of Trent, 14:00], Grey Wagtail [near Sewerage works outlet into Trent].

Thoresby Park - Hawfinch [heard calling and seen briefly perched up, then flew west, 11:56], 10 Tree Sparrow [on feeders], 34 Linnet, 89 Redwing [through in small groups], Raven [through south-west].

Hoveringham - GREAT WHITE EGRET [flew south through the Sailing Lake, 10.25]. Also 6 Red-crested Pochard and 90 Golden Plover.

Westwoodside - c.130 Whooper Swan [in fields near the former Park Drain Hotel, on the Nott's/Linc's boundary, 08:15 at least].

Sunday 4th November

Cottam -presumed American Wigeon [female, found 31st Oct and still present yesterday, although no sign today. It was within a flock of 400+Eurasian Wigeon that have now dispersed further along the Trent with only 60 birds present this morning. It was present within the Cottam Power Station complex that has no public access and was never viewable from any public rights of way at this very sensitive site.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Glaucous Gull [second-winter, Bellmore Lake 13:55 - 14:03 then flew toward the pig fields, but returned to the Bellmore roost, 16:15], MEDITERRANEAN GULL [adult, Bellmore Lake, 14:15], 5 Yellow-legged Gull [3 adults, fouth-winter, third-winter, Bellmore Lake], ROCK PIPIT [flew east over Bellmore Lake, 12:45], Short-eared Owl, Redshank, Whooper Swan [Tiln North, 10:10], 5 GREAT WHITE EGRET [4 seen from Chainbridge viewpoint, one flew east over Bellmoor Lake], Dunlin [Chainbridge Scrape], Golden Plover [c.70 circled Chainbridge Scrape, then headed south], Green Sandpiper [Bellmoor Lake].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 14 Whooper Swan [adults, flew into Clifton Pit, 16:47], 22 Golden Plover [over Branshill, from the Tower hide, 15:28], 2 Redshank [Clifton Pit, mid-afternoon], 2 Common Crossbill [heading east over Clifton Pit calling, 11:02], Red Kite [over Clifton Pit heading east, 08:45].

Holme Pierrepont - GREAT WHITE EGRET [present on Blotts Pit, 16:21 at least]. Also 18 Golden Plover [through Blotts Pit], 2 Stonechat [from middle screen], Redshank.

Spalford - 3 Yellow-legged Gull.

Langford Lowfields - 3 BEARDED TIT [1 male, from the Cromwell Trail reed-bed, near the floating bridge, 13:10].

Collingham Pits - SPOTTED REDSHANK and GREAT WHITE EGRET [both still present on Ferry Lane Lake].

Harlow Wood/Fountaindale - 22 Mandarin [on the main pond mostly drakes 12:00], Common Crossbill [heard only over Harlow Wood, small numbers, perhaps only 2, 12:20].

Bennerley Marsh - 2 Stonechat [midday].

Thrumpton - 15 Whooper Swan [14 adults/1 juvenile, feeding on oilseed rape field, between Thrumpton/Barton SK511329, 11:00 at least].

Hawton - 14 Grey Partridge [Hawton Grasslands in wind turbine field, plus 6 flushed from long grass in adjacent field, 11:00]. Also mixed flock of c.80 Redwing, c.10 Fieldfare.

Barton in Fabis - Green Sandpiper [A453 Balancing Pond, this morning].

Idle Washlands - Marsh Harrier [juvenile, over Slaynes Lane this morning]. Also 110 Golden Plover, Ruff, 9 Redshank.
