Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

 

"Records of certain sensitive species may not appear here during the breeding season, unless publicised by site managers or where records relate to what are likely to be passage migrants or wandering non-breeding individuals rather than breeders. Species that this generally applies to include (but are not necessarily limited to): Avocet, Bearded Tit, Bittern, Black-necked Grebe, Cetti's Warbler, Garganey. Goshawk (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Honey-buzzard (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull, Nightingale, Peregrine (except for Nottingham City Centre), Raven, Red Kite and Woodlark (except from Budby Heath). For a range of other species, we will not include specific breeding information - this includes Barn Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Little Ringed Plover, Nightjar, Turtle Dove and Willow Tit. Nevertheless, please submit your sightings anyway."

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Greater Scaup and Bufflehead [both still present on Clifton Pit, this morning], 2 Sand Martin [flew over Clifton Pit, 10:30], 2 Oystercatcher, Common Snipe, 3+Cetti’s Warbler [at least 3 seen, several more heard around the reserve], 2 Chiffchaff, 3 Tree Sparrow.

Holme Pierrepont - Long-tailed Duck [first-winter drk, still on the Rowing Course, this morning], 18 Dunlin [12 on the Slalom Course and 6 on the Rowing Course this morning], Common Sandpiper, Whooper Swan [Rowing Course], 2 Smew [drk and redhead, A52 Pit], Jack Snipe [Blotts Pit, flush from the track closest to Adbolton Lane near the viewing screen], Woodcock [in the ditch opposite the entrances to the water sports centre, then flew towards the A52 Pit

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Knot [Chainbridge Pit, 09:40 - 15:10 at least]. Also 6 Dunlin, 2 Ruff, Golden Plover, 3 Oystercatcher [Chainbridge Pit], Smew [redhead, Neatholme Pit].

Clifton Village - 5 Hawfinch [still present along Holgate, 08:55 - early afternoon at least], Lesser Spotted Woodpecker [briefly in tree tops by the entrance to Clifton Hall, 11:15].

Wollaton Park - 2+ Rose-ringed Parakeet and roosting Tawny Owl [in the conservation area, this morning].


Once again due to the cold weather many usually wary species have been displaced in gardens across the county today. More notable garden reports were Common Snipe on the Clifton estate; Woodcock in St Anne's and a Meadow Pipit photographed feeding on seed in a West Bridgford garden. Winter Thrushes continued to dominate garden reports with Fieldfare numbers again very high from many gardens and urban areas across the county.

Friday 2nd March

Holme Pierrepont - Long-tailed Duck [first-winter drk, still on the Rowing Course, late afternoon], Bittern [put up on Blotts Pit, 11:55].

Kilvington Lakes - Kumlien's Gull [first-winter, again on West Lake, this afternoon].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Dunlin [next to Nature Centre, late this afternoon], 6 Whooper Swan [4 adults/2 juvs, Clifton Pit, 10:40 - 13:00 at least], Willow Tit [delta gate, 10:18].

Bunny Moor - Jack snipe, 2 Green Sandpiper, kingfisher, 4 Little Egret [along the Fairham Brook, this afternoon].

Thoresby park - Brambling [on feeder in private garden, this afternoon].

Thrumpton - 2 Whooper Swan [2 adults, viewed from Church Rd, 13:00].

Southwell - 2 Woodcock, Common Snipe, Goldcrest, Reed Buntings, Greenfinches, Yellowhammers and good numbers of winter thrushes [Brackenhurst campus].

Hoveringham - 2 Goosander, 9 Dunlin, Common Redshank, Tufted Duck x Pochard hybrid [Railway Pit], Jack Snipe, Dunlin, Golden Plover [Sailing Lake].

Wollaton Park - Lesser Spotted Woodpecker [briefly this morning].


Cold weather has been causeing huge problems for birds and many usually wary species have been seen in gardens across the county during the recent cold spell. Numbers have increased dramatically, but even more noticeable has been a huge influx of fieldfares reported from many gardens across the county.

Thursday 1st March

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Dunlin [flushed off ice on Conneries, 14:20], Ringed Plover [Clifton Pit, then flew over the river, 13:15], 2 Dunlin [Clifton Pit, 11:45].

Barton in Fabis - Merlin [male, flew through the A453 Balancing Pond towards Thrumpton, 13:15, c.40 Golden Plover, 10 Common Snipe.

Owthorpe - Jack Snipe [flushed from ditch near the ruuble pile, 13:00].

Sutton in Ashfield - 27 Whooper Swan [over Sutton Lawn, flying North- West, midday].

Kilvington Lakes - Kumlien's Gull [first-winter, flew into West Lake, 10.30]. Also 2 Whooper Swan, 6 Dunlin 2 Common Snipe, 2 Jack Snipe [all at the water's edge].

Rufford Country Park - Woodcock [adjacent to Manor Farm access road], 13 Goosander [on the main lake].

Lenton - 2 Ruddy Shelduck [on the Jubilee Campus lake, University of Nottingham].

Annesley Pit Top - 6 Whooper Swan [this morning].
