Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

"Records of certain sensitive species may not appear here during the breeding season, unless publicised by site managers or where records relate to what are likely to be passage migrants or wandering non-breeding individuals rather than breeders. Species that this generally applies to include (but are not necessarily limited to): Avocet, Bearded Tit, Bittern, Black-necked Grebe, Cetti's Warbler, Garganey. Goshawk (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Honey-buzzard (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull, Nightingale, Peregrine (except for Nottingham City Centre), Raven, Red Kite and Woodlark (except from Budby Heath). For a range of other species, we will not include specific breeding information - this includes Barn Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Little Ringed Plover, Nightjar, Turtle Dove and Willow Tit. Nevertheless, please submit your sightings anyway."

Holme Pierrepont - LITTLE GULL [first-summer, Blotts Pit, this evening].

Langford Lowfields - Caspian Gull [2cy, still present].

Besthorpe NR - GARGANEY, 2 Curlew [Mons Pool].

Hoveringham - BLACK REDSTART [Female/immature, still present on the Railway Pit in the vicinity of the scout compound, this afternoon].

Kilvington Lakes - Little Ringed Plover, 2 Common Tern.

Tollerton - 3+ Yellow Wagtail [in fields off Tollerton Lane, this morning].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 Black-tailed Godwit [Clifton Pit, 08:30], 4 Little Ringed Plover [2 adults/2 Juvs, Clifton Pit, 18:11].

Friday 29th June

Langford Lowfields - Caspian Gull [2cy, this evening]. Also 2 near adult Yellow-legged Gull.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 Black-tailed Godwit, Green Sandpiper, Common Gull [Clifton Pit, this evening].

Hoveringham - BLACK REDSTART [Female/immature, Railway Pit 10:30 - 12:30, in the vicinity of the scout compound but elusive. Also single Hobby and Little Ringed Plover.

Thursday 28th June

Holme Pierrepont - BLACK TERN, first-summer LITTLE GULL [A52 Pit, late afternoon]

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Pied Flycatcher [male Neatholme Fen, on water ski pit side between end of the fen and beginning of pit, 11:00].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Green Sandpiper [Works Pond, 14:00].

Osberton - QUAIL [singing male, on the Osberton estate this morning].

Epperstone - Spotted Flycatcher [five juveniles fledged yesterday evening and this morning from private garden].

Wednesday 27th June

Skegby - 1+Bee-eater [heard passing through east to west, 10:30], Hobby [over east to west, 14:00].

Holme Pierrepont - LITTLE GULL [first-summer, A52 Pit, early evening].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Green Sandpiper, Common Redshank [Clifton Pit, this evening].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Common Tern [first-summer, Chainbridge scrape, 19.00].

Budby Common - 6+ Tree Pipit, 3 Woodlark.

Tuesday 26th June

Budby Common - 6 Tree Pipit, 2 Woodlark [before dusk], 10 Woodcock, 3 Nightjar [1 seen, 2 churring at dusk].

Thoresby Park - Woodcock [roding male, 21:10].

Langford Lowfields - 3cy Caspian Gull, adult MEDITERRANEAN GULL, Black-tailed Godwit, Curlew, Common Sandpiper.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Black-tailed Godwit [Clifton Pit, 18:50], 4 Oystercatcher, Hobby.

Hoveringham - Hobby, Green Sandpiper [Sailing Lake].

Epperstone - Spotted Flycatcher [pair busy feeding young, in private garden].

Monday 25th June

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Little Ringed Plover, Common Redshank [Clifton Pit this evening].

Skegby - Hobby [over 17:15 and 20:30].

Sunday 24th June

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Ringed Plover, 1 Little Ringed Plover [Blotts Pit, 16:00].

Thoresby Park - Hobby.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Black-tailed Godwit [Clifton Pit, 08:10 - 12:34 at least]. Also Green Sandpiper.

Saturday 23rd June

Clumber Park - 4 Nightjar, Woodcock [13 separate sightings of roding males], Tawny Owl [this evening].

Finningley GP - MEDITERRANEAN GULL [adult, flew north-west, early evening], 4 Common Redshank [two pairs, one with 2 well grown juvs, other pair agitated].

Friday 22nd June

Sutton in Ashfield - Peregrine [circling over, 18:00].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Green Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover.

Kilvington Lakes - Green Sandpiper [North Lake, this morning].

Thursday 21st June

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 14 Black-tailed Godwit [Clifton Pit, 12:38 - 19:55 then flew south but returned 21:52], 2 GARGANEY [moulting drk's, still present on Ridge and Furrow/Tween Pond], Green Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover.

Netherfield Lagoons - Common Sandpiper [Deep Pit, on the tern raft, this afternoon]. Also Peregrine.

King's Mill Reservoir - Common Sandpiper, c. 60 Common Swift.

Wednesday 20th June

Rufford Country Park- 2 Spotted Flycatcher [calling pair seen, 15:00].

Kilvington Lakes - OSPREY [seen to catch a Roach, 14:00], Hobby, male Sparrohawk [West Lake, this morning].

Cotgrave - Cuckoo [heard calling near the Grantham Canal].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [moulting drk's still present this morning], Common Redshank, Green Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover.

Tuesday 19th June

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [still present on Ridge and Furrow this morning], Little Ringed Plover, 2 Wigeon [Clifton Pit].

Kilvington Lakes - OSPREY [flew south-west carrying a fish, this morning].

Monday 18th June

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [moulting drk's, still Ridge and Furrow, 11:25].

Rufford - Hawfinch [female, in private garden next to Rufford CP, this morning].

Sunday 17th June

Holme Pierrepont - Little Ringed Plover [Blotts Pit], Cuckoo [heard Between Blotts pit and A52, 15:45].

Thoresby Park - Hawfinch [flew south calling, 10:38], 2 Tree Pipit [18:05], Siskin [male, on feeders].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [moulting drk's, Ridge and Furrow, 10:13].

Saturday 16th June

Budby Common - 2 Common Redstart, Tree Pipit, Cuckoo [calling occassionally], 7+Woodcock, 1+Nightjar [churring], Tawny Owls [calling].

Kilvington Lakes - OSPREY [11:00 - 11:30, then flew off south-west].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [moulting drk's still present on Tween Pond].

Clipstone - 2 Hobby [hawking over castle field].

Friday 15th June

Thoresby Park - Nightjar [churring, 22:42], 2 Woodcock [over 22:09], Hawfinch [female, 19:09], Siskin [male on feeders], c.30 Common Swift.

Budby Common - Nightjar [churring, 22:10], 3+ Woodcock [one pair, 7 sightings of singles in flight, 21:30 - 22:00] , 3 Tawny Owl calling, 3 Tree Pipit earlier.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [Tween Pond, 20:11]. Also Green Sandpiper, Hobby.

Market Warsop - BRENT GOOSE [flew over north-east, 19:57].

Wilford - BLACK TERN [flew upriver from the Bee bank, 18:23].

Budby Common - Woodlark [singing male], Crossbill [over calling].

Holme Pierrepont - Hobby [hawking dragonflies over Blotts Pit, 12:00- 12:30]

Thoresby Park - Woodcock [21:57], Siskin, c.30 Common Swift.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [moulting drk's, Tween Pond , 11:00].

Besthorpe NR - Green Sandpiper [Meering].

Kilvington Lakes - Peregrine [adult this morning].

Wollaton Park - single Rose-ringed Parakeet, 2 Mandarin.

Wednesday 13th June

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [moulting drk's Ridge and Furrow, 12:15], Green Sandpiper [Ridge and Furrow, 19:55].

Chilwell - Hobby [over the retail park, 19:35].

Ollerton - Peregrine.

Costock - QUAIL [male, singing 05:00 - 07:00, in an area with no public access].

Tuesday 12th June

Budby Common - Tree pipit, 3 Woodcock [different birds noted rodding], 3 Nightjar [single male seen, at least 2 others churring from different sights on the heath at the same time as the other was seen], Tawny Owl.

Costock - QUAIL [singing briefly this evening].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 GARGANEY [moulting drakes, Ridge and Furrow, 11:03, moving to Clifton Pit then Tween Pond, 17:15], Green Sandpiper [Ridge and Furrow, this morning].

Besthorpe NR - 4 Avocet, Green Sandpiper, 2 Widgeon, 2 Pochard, 10+ Gadwall [Mons Pool, this afternoon].

Monday 11th June

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Caspian Gull [second-summer, Bellmore Lake, from 17:20], also 3 Yellow-legged Gull, adult Common Gull.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - GARGANEY [moulting drk, Clifton Pit], Green Sandpiper [Ridge and Furrow].

Farnsfield - Hobby [flew northwards over the White Post farm].

Lenton - Peregrine [perched on the university trent building clock above highfields boating lake, 11:00].

Clumber Park - Oystercatcher.

Holme Pierrepont - Cuckoo [singing, near Skylarks, 09:30].

Costock - QUAIL [singing male, sustained singing 07:00 - 07:30, also heard briefly on evenings of Sat 9th and Sun 10th. Unfortunatly the bird is in an area with no public access].

Sunday 10th June

Wollaton Park - LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER [A pair have successfully raised at least two juveniles that fledged the nest site Friday].

Clumber Park - Nightjar [churring briefly on the ground, then flew into woodland], 3 Common Redstart [male and female alarm calling as juvenile nearby], 2 Tree Pipit.

Langford Lowfields - 2 drk GARGANEY, Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover, Yellow-legged Gull.

Holme Pierrepont - 3 Hobby [Blotts Pit/A52 Pit, 13:40], Peregrine [male, 12:45].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Little Ringed Plover, Green Sandpiper [Clifton Pit].

Saturday 9th June

Langford Lowfields - Ruff, Dunlin and 4 Ringed Plover.

Bennerley Marsh - Ringed Plover [mid-afternoon].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Green Sandpiper [Ridge and Furrow, 10:55], Little Ringed Plover [Clifton Pit].

Wollaton Park - 5+Rose-ringed Parakeet, 2 drk Mandarin [Conservation area, c.10:00].

Holme Pierrepont - SANDERLING [circled Blotts Pit, 08:45], 3 AVOCET [Blotts Pit, 08:36], 2 Hobby [Blotts Pit, 14:00].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Little Ringed Plover, 5 Oystercatcher [Clifton Pit, 16:20], Pink-footed Goose [below Cottages Flash, viewed from the riverpath, 18:00].

Thoresby Park - Oystercatcher [Thorsby Lake], c.60 Common Swift [late afternoon].

Little Morton - OSPREY [ sat in tree in the middle of a carrot field eating a fish, 15:30].

Wednesday 6th June

Spalford - 2 Caspian Gull [both first-summer], 6 Yellow-legged Gull [4 first-summer, 2 second-summer], 350 LBB Gull, 2 Herring Gull, 1 GBB Gull, 10 BH Gull [Spalford pig fields]. Also Cuckoo and a total of 49 Shelduck [Spalford Pit].

Holme Pierrepont - 2 AVOCET [still present, Blotts Pit].

Kirkby in Ashfield - 4 Hobby [Hollinwell golf club entrance].
