Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

"Records of certain sensitive species may not appear here during the breeding season, unless publicised by site managers or where records relate to what are likely to be passage migrants or wandering non-breeding individuals rather than breeders. Species that this generally applies to include (but are not necessarily limited to): Avocet, Bearded Tit, Bittern, Black-necked Grebe, Cetti's Warbler, Garganey. Goshawk (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Honey-buzzard (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull, Nightingale, Peregrine (except for Nottingham City Centre), Raven, Red Kite and Woodlark (except from Budby Heath). For a range of other species, we will not include specific breeding information - this includes Barn Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Little Ringed Plover, Nightjar, Turtle Dove and Willow Tit. Nevertheless, please submit your sightings anyway."

Holme Pierrepont - Spotted Sandpiper [first-winter, still showing well on the Canoe Slalom Course, 14:00 at least], Long-tailed Duck [first-winter drk, still on the Rowing Course by the finishing line, mid-afternoon].

Owthorpe - Great Grey Shrike [at distance on hedgeline across ploughed field towards Newfields farm, 11:30, then again from bridle-path just downhill from Vimy Ridge farm showing well on telegraph wires in field looking back towards canal, 12:30].

Langford Lowfields - male Marsh Harrier, 2 Stonechat.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Water Rail, Kingfisher [from the Visitor Centre], Goosander, Goldeneye, Common Snipe [Clifton Pit].

Rufford Country Park - c.15 Hawfinch [main car-park area, both in trees and feeding on the ground, early/mid-morning].

Holme Pierrepont - Spotted Sandpiper [first-winter, still showing well on the Canoe Slalom Course], Long-tailed Duck [still on the Rowing Course, ranging between the 500m marker and the finishing line], Smew [drake still on A52 Pit, this morning], 14 Whooper Swan [same birds from Langford, this afternoon].

Holme Pierrepont - Spotted Sandpiper [still present on the Canoe Slalom Course], Common Sandpiper [briefly on the Canoe Slalom Course with the Spotted Sandpiper, both birds then flew eastwards down the slalom and out of sight around the second bridge], Long-tailed Duck [showing very well on the Rowing Course, ranging between the 500m and 750m markers], c.150 Pink-footed Geese [through, 10:15].

Netherfield Lagoons - Bittern [in flight over the Deep Pit, mid-afternoon dropping into reeds in the north-east corner], 3 Water Rail [heard], Peregrine [on pylon over on Severn Trent fields].

Harworth Pit Top - 2 Jack Snipe [flushed late morning].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Black-necked Grebe [still Neatholme Pit, mid-morning].

Cotham - Iceland Gull [first-winter on the landfill, showing well from the cycle track, 10:50].

Hoveringham - first-winter Iceland Gull, second-winter Caspian Gull, first-winter Mediterranean Gull [in the Railway Pit roost, this afternoon], 2 Caspian Gull [adult and first-winter, Sailing Lake roost], Red-breasted Merganser [Sailing Lake, late afternoon and Railway Pit, 10:30], Red Kite, Common Sandpiper [Sailing Lake, this afternoon], Smew [redhead, Railway Pit, this morning], 2 Whooper Swan [flew west through the Railway Pit, 10:30].

Holme Pierrepont - Spotted Sandpiper [showing well on the Canoe Slalom Course, mid-afternoon at least], Long-tailed Duck [still present on the Rowing Course, favoring the finishing line area along side the rowing club complex].

Harworth Pit Top - Short-eared Owl [this afternoon].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Black-necked Grebe [still Neatholme Pit this morning], 3 Woodcock [northern edge of Neathome Fen], 50+ Lesser Redpoll [Linghurst Wood], Green Sandpiper [Walters lane], 3 Ruff, 2 Common Redshank [Chainbridge Scrape east].

Gringley Carr - 10 Corn Bunting [on wires, this morning], 10 Brambling, 4 Tree Sparrow [within large Finch flock on field edge, comprising of at least 2 Yellowhammer, 4 Reed Bunting and larger numbers of House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Goldfinch and Greenfinch], Little Egret, 2 Grey Heron, 300 Northern Lapwing, 3 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel, 10+ Stock Dove, 50+ Fieldfare, 20+ Redwing, 500-600 Starling.

Worksop - Rose-ringed Parakeet [female, in trees around Tesco car park].

Hoveringham - Two first-winter Iceland Gull, first-winter Mediterranean Gull [in the Railway Pit roost, this afternoon]. Hoveringham - Iceland Gull [first-winter, a different bird to yesterday, on the Sailing Lake, from 15:00], Red-brested Merganser [Sailing Lake, late afternoon only], Smew [redhead, Carp lake, Gonalston Lane].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Great white Egret [South-West corner of Neatholme Scrape], Brambling [with Chaffinch flock, Walters Farm], Hawfinch and Nuthatch [Lound Village X-roads in centre of village], 9 Goosander [Bellmoor Lake].

Harworth Pit Top - 4 Jack Snipe, 2 Stonechat, Raven.

Holme Pierrepont - Smew [Redhead, on the A52 Pit, early afternoon].

Bennerley Marsh - 2 Raven [pair on the Viaduct midday].

Friday 19th January

Hoveringham - first-winter Iceland Gull and adult Caspian Gull [in the Sailing Lake roost. Also in the roost was a first-winter gull showing characteristics of Kumliens'Gull. The identification was not certain and the bird is therefore a probable], Red-breasted Merganser [female again present late afternoon].

Stoke Bardolph - Common Sandpiper, Goldeneye [Sewage outlet], 6 Chiffchaff, several Meadow Pipit and Grey Wagtail [along channel to sewage works].

Bennerley Marsh - 2 Stonechat [pair, Chat Corner].

Kilvington, Manor Farm Wetland [private site] - 68 Common Snipe, 1 Jack Snipe, 1200 Lapwing [over in one flock], 40 Golden Plover [over, this morning].

Holme Pierrepont - Smew [drk, A52 Pit, this morning].

Rufford Country Park - 17 Hawfinch [still present around the car park/Lime Tree Av area].

Thursday 18th January

Newark - Barn Owl [seen hunting over the road just North of the British Sugar plant, 18.30]

Finningley GP's - 91 Curlew [into roost this afternoon], 2 Common Redshank, 2 Pochard.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Great White Egret [Chainbridge Scrape, 15:00].

Skegby - Raven [over south-west, 13:15].

Hoveringham - first-winter Iceland Gull and adult Caspian Gull [in the Sailing Lake roost], Red-breasted Merganser [female, on the Sailing Lake, late afternoon only]. Also Common Sandpiper and Common Snipe.

Harworth Pit Top - 3 Short-eared Owl and Jack Snipe [this afternoon]

Holme Pierrepont - Long-tailed Duck [still present on the Rowing Course from the 750m marker, this morning]. Also 3 Goldeneye, 3 Pochard.

Mansfield - 4 Grey Partridge [in grassland to the south of Mansfield Rugby Club, SK57195 60748].

Kings Mill Reservoir - Red-brested Merganser [adult male, on the A38 side of the reservoir, this morning]. Also 6 Teal.

Rufford Country Park - 8+ Hawfinch [feeding on ground and in Limes near car park, this morning]. Also c.20 Siskin, 8 Goosander.

Tuesday 16th January

Hoveringham - Red-brested Merganser [female, late afternoon on the Sailing Lake], Oystercatcher, 9 Siskin, 7 Lesser redpoll [Railway Lake].

Holme Pierrepont - Long-tailed Duck [first winter drk, still present near the Rowing Course finish line, late morning].

Owthorpe - Great Grey Shrike [still present on wires/hedgerows near the rubble pile between Grantham Canal and bridleway to Newfield Farm, 12:30, c.SK668323].
