Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Keith Rainford Bullfinch194@gmail.com These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

Barton in Fabis - Dartford Warbler [adult male again in the field margin area, 08:17 - 13:30 at least but can go missing for long periods]; also 6+ Stonechat in the area.

Hoveringham - BITTERN [again on the Railway Pit]; also 3 Red-crested Pochard [drake/2 females], 2 Mandarin [pair].

Monday 19th December

Barton in Fabis - Dartford Warbler [adult male and immature again in the field margin area of rough hedgerow/scrub, 09:45; with the male still present late morning at least].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - SMEW [redhead, back on Coneries 10:48].

Holme Pierrepont - SMEW [redhead, Blotts Pit 10:34].

Sunday 18th December

Barton in Fabis - Dartford Warbler [adult male and immature in the area of rough hedgerow/scrub, 08:45; the male then showed on and off in the rough hedgerow/scrub and stubble field to 15:15 at least but generally very elusive].

Bunny - Hen Harrier [potential male on the outskirts of Bunny, early afternoon].

Carlton - Blackcap [female on sunflower hearts in a private garden].

Saturday 17th December

Barton in Fabis - Dartford Warbler [adult male showed well again mid-afternoon in the area of rough hedgerow/scrub, SK 51380 32809].

Langford Lowfields - 2 SMEW [redheads, Deep Water Pit 08:55 - late afternoon], 6 Marsh Harrier [into roost on Phase 2]; also BITTERN, Barn Owl, 2 Peregrine, 12 Curlew.

Gotham Moor - 3 Redshank [flew from drainage dyke near Fairham Brook], 2 Green Sandpiper [in the same drainage dyke], 2 Stonechat [side of Fairham Brook]; also 4 Little Egret, Kingfisher, c.60 Fieldfare, c.30 redwing, c.20 Skylark.

Holme Pierrepont - SMEW [redhead, A52 Pit, 15:30].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - SMEW [redhead still Main Pond, this morning], CASPIAN GULL [adult], 2 Great White Egret, 3 Pintail [Clifton Pit].

Friday 16th December

Barton in Fabis - Dartford Warbler [single bird showed well early morning again in the area of rough hedgerow/scrub, but no further sign of either bird by late afternoon]; also Great White Egret, Chiffchaff [by the river].

King's Mill Reservoir - MEDITERRANEAN GULL [1st-winter again in the roost this afternoon]; also Shelduck [female still], Goldeneye [female/imm male], 14 Shoveler [6 drakes].

Tollerton - JACK SNIPE [Tollerton Airfield, late afternoon].

Newark on Trent - SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF [Newark Sugar Factory, in the outflow ditch to the Trent]; also 7 or 8 Chiffchaff.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - SMEW [Main Pond]; also 57 Goosander [flew into Clifton Pit, late afternoon].

Wilford - Great White Egret [by the Fairham Brook outflow to the Trent, this afternoon].

Lound [Idle Valley NR] - Glossy Ibis [flew from Conservation Lake and looked to be dropping over Chainbridge Pit, 09:30], Hawfinch [in copse by the river bend at north end of Conservation Lake, 11:00 at least], Marsh Harrier [Clayworth Common]

Hoveringham - BITTERN [Railway Pit, showed again but only briefly].

Thursday 15th December

Barton in Fabis/Thrumpton - 2 Dartford Warbler [The first county record of an adult male, seen briefly in riverside field Thrumpton from the Long Eaton side of the river, 12:00; it was then relocated mid-afternoon on the far side of the field in an area of rough hedgerow/scrub opposite the Trentside riverside chalets Barton in Fabis; SK 51380 32809. Whilst the male was been observed a second immature bird was discovered just a few meters along the same area of hedgerow/scrub with both birds showing together on a number of occasions throughout the afternoon. The male bird was then seen to fly back over the field towards Thrumpton c.15:15 with the immature bird still showing in the hedgerow/scrub 15:30 at least.

Also JACK SNIPE, several Common Snipe, 6+Stonechat, large numbers of Finches, Reed Bunting, Skylark.

Dartford Warbler - Barton in Fabis.

King's Mill Reservoir - 2 MEDITERRANEAN GULL [1st-winter and adult; the adult is ringed left leg + colour ringed red possibly with white letters? on right leg but code not seen in fading light]; also Shelduck [female still present] 23 Shoveler [10 drakes], Black-headed Gull [leucistic indervidual again in the roost].

South Muskham - 2 SMEW [redheads, A1 Pit], 2 Great White Egret, Little Egret, 12 Grey Heron 167 Gadwall, 23 Goldeneye, 121 Teal, 24 Lapwing, 2 Common Snipe, 5 Little Grebe.

Hoveringham - BITTERN [Railway Pit, this morning].

Hoveringham - Great White Egret, 2 Stonechat, 120+ Redwing, 100+ Fieldfare [Sailing Lake and Track mid-morning], c.1020 Greylag Geese, 150+ Canada Geese [also hybrids, Egyptian Geese, 4 Mute Swan in with 1,200+ mixed goose flock by the Sailing Lake track until 12.30].

King's Mill Reservoir - Goldeneye [drk], Wigeon [pair], Shelduck, 5 Shoveler [3 drk's].

Gedling Crematorium - c.100 Pink-footed Geese [heading west, 09:30]; also Chiffchaff [briefly in hedgerow].

Sunday 11th December

Lound [Idle Valley NR] - TUNDRA BEAN GOOSE [flew over Chainbridge Lane heading north-west calling 15:05; and again over towards Walters Lane, 15:35], MEDITERRANEAN GULL [adult Chainbridge Pit, 15:25].

Holme Pierrepont - Common Scoter [female, still A52 Pit late morning]; also Marsh Harrier.

Collingham Pits - Great White Egret, Marsh Harrier [late morning]; also large numbers of Fieldfare.

Wollaton - 60+Siskin [Martin's Pond, late morning].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - CASPIAN GULL [adult, Sailing Pit on buoy no3, 09:34], SMEW [redhead, still Coneries showing well from the car park bridge mid-morning], 3 Whooper Swan [Main Pond, then flew south over the river 10:37].

Friday 9th December

Gotham - Red-flanked Bluetail [1st-winter briefly in hedge and on the track mid-afternoon (Grid Ref: SK 53263 28841), but no further sign by dusk; access via Wood Lane].

Gunthorpe - Ring-necked Duck [female, on the Main GP (Dollar Lake) with Tufted Ducks 10:19 - 11:54 at least].

Gotham Moor - Green Sandpiper [side of drainage ditch leading into Fairham Brook, early morning], 3 Stonechat [banks of Fairham Brook near the railway line bridge]; also Kingfisher, 3 Little Egret, c.60 Skylark, c.150 Fieldfare.

Hoveringham - 3 Stonechat, 3 Chiffchaff [Sailing Lake/Annexe Pit].
