Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

"Records of certain sensitive species may not appear here during the breeding season, unless publicised by site managers or where records relate to what are likely to be passage migrants or wandering non-breeding individuals rather than breeders. Species that this generally applies to include (but are not necessarily limited to): Avocet, Bearded Tit, Bittern, Black-necked Grebe, Cetti's Warbler, Garganey. Goshawk (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Honey-buzzard (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull, Nightingale, Peregrine (except for Nottingham City Centre), Raven, Red Kite and Woodlark (except from Budby Heath). For a range of other species, we will not include specific breeding information - this includes Barn Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Little Ringed Plover, Nightjar, Turtle Dove and Willow Tit. Nevertheless, please submit your sightings anyway."

Friday 27th April

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Dunlin, Common Sandpiper [Clifton Pit, 15:30], Bufflehead [ringed female, still Clifton Pit, 14:34], 100 plus hirundines mostly House Martin, several Common Swift [over Clifton Pit, this afternoon].

Barton in Fabis - 2 Common Sandpiper [along the river near Cottages Flash, this afternoon], Common Swift, 2 Yellow Wagtail [Barton Lane].

Hoveringham - 2 Common Crane [flew north-west over the Sailing Lake, 12:45], 10 Black-tailed Godwit [Sailing Lake, 17:30 at least], 2 Dunlin, Common Sandpiper, Hobby, 6 Northern Wheatear.

Cottam/Coates - 4+ Grasshopper Warbler [a minimum of 4 reelers, possibly up to 6 along stretch of river between Cottam and Coates, this morning], Short-eared Owl [flushed and flew east over Cottam].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 MEDITERRANEAN GULL [adults through towards Barton Island, 07:25], Long-eared Owl [Injured bird found on Coneries bank on Barton Lane, this morning. Taken into care but sadly died], Grasshopper Warbler [reeling behind Kingfisher hide].

Netherfield Lagoons - White Stork [drifting high to the west, c.12:30], 4 MEDITERRANEAN GULL [2 calling adults over the Deep Pit, then headed off high east, 09:40. 2 different adults in full breeding plumage down on the water briefly, then headed off high east, 11:10], Grasshopper Warbler [reeling], 3 Common Tern, single Fieldfare.

Holme Pierrepont - White Stork [soaring on thermals above Skylarks nature reserve, drifting high to the west, 12:20], 3 Little Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper, Sedge Warbler, Garden Warbler [Blotts Pit, this evening].

Belated news - Unconfirmed report of a Golden Oriole on Budby South Forest on 17th April, heard only.

Wednesday 18th April

Netherfield Lagoons - Grasshopper Warbler [reeling, this evening], 2 Reed Warbler, Northern Wheatear, Common Tern, Green Sandpiper [calling, heading north at dusk].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - COMMON SCOTER [female, still on Bellmoor Lake this evening].

Southwell - 2 Pink-footed Geese [over oakmere golf course, 18:30].

Thrumpton - SANDWICH TERN [flew from the Long Eaton GP's to the river Thrumpton/Power Station area, 09:06].

Hoveringham - 5 SANDWICH TERN [4 present briefly on the Sailing Lake, 07:30 before moving off east. A single bird was present from 09:40 - 09:45 before moving off north-west. Also 2 ARCTIC TERN, Little Ringed Plover and Ruddy Shelduck.

Woodborough - Red Kite [over, mobbed by Buzzard and Crows, 16:30].

Kirkby in Ashfield - Raven [flew over Hollinwell golf course] and 2 House Martin [over the A611 along side the course entrance, 16:00].

Langford Lowfields - BAR-TAILED GODWIT [still present on Phase 3 this evening, view only from the southern boundary public footpath].

Newstead Abbey - Carrion Crow [leucistic individual, in the first field on the right after you pass the barrier at the lodge at Annersley end, this evening].

Thrumpton - Marsh Harrier [cream crown, over fields near the river path, heading towards the A453, 17:03].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - RING OUZEL [flew from ploughed field next to The Willows over to north-east corner of Neatholme Scrape, 15:40], 3 Yellow Wagtail [Doughty’s Pit, midday], Cuckoo [heard calling from Sandy Hills], 2 Common Whitethroat [Chainbridge Pit along the riverbank and second on Water Ski Pit], SMEW, 5 Avocet [Neatholme Fen], Black-necked Grebe [Neatholme Scrape], Curlew, 2 Common Redshank [Tiln North].
