Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

Records of certain species will not appear here during the breeding season - but please send in your reports regardless.

Netherfield Lagoons - c1,000 Starling[murmuration and roost, this evening that in turn attracted a Peregrine], 2 Shelduck and Oystercatcher [on the Deep Pit].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 53 Whooper Swan [Clayworth Common], 5 Ruff [Chainbridge Pit], 15 Ringed Plover, 3 Common Snipe and a Barn Owl [Tiln North, Restoration Area].

RSPB Langford Lowfields - Marsh Harrier [female, hunting over Phase 2] and a Stonechat [male, on Phase 1 this afternoon].

Idle Valley Nature Reserve - Firecrest [Bellmore lake, noted along path heading north between wooden footbridge and the four way path junction 14:00, and was then relocated here 14:45].

Retford - Black Redstart [male, in garden at Rose Bowl Gardens].

Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint - 2 Goshawk [showing well from the layby, right of the monument, 14:00]. Also 11 Mandarin, 37 Goosander and 3 Shelduck [Welbeck Lake] and 3 Marsh Tit [on the feeders].

Idle Washlands - Hen Harrier [ringtail, just West of Misson along Slaynes Lane, this morning], 7 Whooper Swan [2 ad, 5 juv, flew over Hagg Lane Flash from the East and landed on Newington flash, South Yorks], Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plover and 14 Common Redshank [Hagg Lane Flash].

Bunny - Stonechat [male,by the brook on Bunny Moor] 5 Little Egrets and 100 Fieldfare nearby and flock of Yellowhammer [on stubble field on the south side of Bunny Woods].

Clifton - 2 Raven ["cronking" over Brinkhill Cresent, 10:40].

Rufford Country Park - 9 Hawfinch [from the main car park this morning].

Netherfield Lagoons - 2 Ring-necked Parakeet [flew over the reserve from Carlton towards Holme Pierrepont, calling loudly. About an hour later they flew back again towards Carlton].

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Common Redshank and 4 Shelduck [this morning].

Worksop - c120 Pink-footed Geese [over water meadows, 09:10].

Clumber Park - c120 Pink-footed Geese [over, 09:00]. Also 4 Mandarin [2 pairs, from the Ornamental bridge].

Saturday 27th February

Eakring - Red Kite [Soaring next to the wind turbines, along the Eakring Road, 13:40].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Raven [from the Delta hide].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 2 Greater Scaup [pair, present on Blaco Pits this morning], 2 Raven [flew west over the village, 14:20], Marsh Harrier [female, over Neatholme Scrape then disappeared towards Neatholme Pit]. 37 Whooper Swan and Short-eared Owl [Clayworth common], 2 Oystercatcher [Neatholme Fen] and 3 Oystercatcher [Chainbridge Scrape].

Carburton - Stonechat [from the feeding station layby East of memorial] also several Marsh Tit [from the feeding station].

Bulwell - 12 Grey partridge [feeding in field back of high cemetery].

Gotham - 5 Brambling [in hedgerow, at summit of cottages hill, 11:45].

Nottinghamshire - Lesser Spotted Woodpecker [female, site undisclosed].

Thursday 25th February

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Smew [1 drk, on the A52 Pit, late afternoon].

Stanton on the Wolds - 3 Raven ["cronking" flying together in tight formation and wheeling and turning on each other as they flew off South/West, 14:15].

Idle Valley Nature Reserve - 2 Ruff, 1 Ringed Plover, 2 Goosander and 5 Goldeneye [Hallcroft Lake, this afternoon].

West Burton - Raven ["cronking" from a electricity pylon, 14:10].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Bittern [flying around tower hide, mobbed by gulls this afternoon].

The Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint - Goshawk [one displaying at midday, viewed from the right of the monument].

Hucknall - 2 Raven [circling over the town centre, with a Common Buzzard, 11:00].

Holme Pierrepont - Smew [drk, on Works Pond to North/West of Blotts pit, 16:10 to 17:20 at least].

Sutton on Trent - Raven ["cronking" from a Chestnut tree, in the tree nursery before flying North/East towards the Trent and Girton].

Misson - 2 Oystercatcher 2 Ringed Plover and 2 Stonechat [Slaynes Lane].

Gotham - c100 Brambling [flock still present on Cottages Hill, although more skittish and ranging more widley, this afternoon].

Nottingham - 2 Lesser Spotted Woodpecker [pair, calling and drumming, undisclosed location].

Girton Pits - Great Northern Diver [Juv, still on the A1133 pit].

RSPB Langford Lowfields - 2 Cettis warbler [one near the board walk and the other in the second pool on the path on the way out - from the beach hut] Also Water Rail.

Wollaton Park - c50 Siskin [near the main lake].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] -2 Short-eared Owl [showing well hunting between the Common and Tiln North, 16:15 – 17:00 ], 37 Whooper Swan and 105 Mute Swans [Clayworth Common], 5 Ruff, 5 Ringed Plover, Greenshank [heard], 4 Oystercatcher, 99 Mute Swan [Tiln Pits and area East of River].

Sherwood Forest NNR - Crossbill [flyover, calling near Crown Hill]. Also Peregrine and 30 Redwings [Budby South Forest].

Idle Washlands - 450 Wigeon, 10 Gadwall, 18 Shelduck [Hagg Lane Flash].

Gringley Carr - 250 Northern Lapwing, 30+ Stock Dove, 450 Starling, 100+ Linnet and 6 Skylark.

Collingham Pits - 2 Smew [redheads, still on Ferry Lane Lake]. Also Stonechat.

Carlton-on-Trent - 2 Whooper Swan [with Mute Swan herd, in field just South of village by the River Trent, this afternoon].

Gonalston - 2 Brambling [on feeders, near Car Beck Cottage] Also 8 Little Egret and Little Owl.

Bentinck Pit Tip - 5 Jack Snipe [this morning].

Barton-in-Fabis - Raven [flew over Cottages Flash, 11:30] Also drk Mandarin [with the Greylag flock].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Raven ["cronking" over Tower Hide, heading towards Bransill Wood, 0 9:00 and again 09:20, over the Wheatear Field].

Netherfield Lagoons - Willow Tit [again along the Lower Path]. Also 10 Little Egrets, 3 Cetti’s Warbler and Chiffchaff.

Gotham - 40+Brambling [still on Cottages Hill, in the trees/hedgerow along Soldier's Lane, 08:15].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 39 Whooper Swan [Clayworth Common], Short-eared Owl and Curlew [The Willows], 5 Ruff and Oystercatcher [Clayworth Common, Conservation Lake], 2 Pink-footed Geese and 1 possible 'Taverner's' race Canada Goose [Sheep Fields].

Besthorpe NWT - 13 Common Redshank [Mons Pool].

Kings Mill Reservoir - Little Gull [1w, again in the gull roost, this evening].

Gotham - c200 Brambling [flock still present at the same location, though dispersed quite quickly, this afternoon]. Also Tawny Owl [calling from the wood behind, 14:30].

Misson - Short-eared Owl [hunting around horse paddocks & fields just south of Misson village, this afternoon].

The Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint - Goshawk [male], Sparrowhawk, 6 Common Buzzard, Stonechat [female on bush around lake] 9 Shelduck and Marsh Tit.

Idle Valley Nature Reserve - Yellow-legged Gull [adult, Bellmoor Lake on main island, 13:45].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 3 Raven [2 over towards Long Eaton, 11:28 and a single "cronking" over Mian Pond, 14:00].

Gotham - c200 Brambling [pure flock, in the hedgerow/trees lining the track, at the top of the South/West face of Cottages hill, this afternoon]. Also 2 Red Kite [drifted over Gotham Hill Wood, 13:00 - 13:15].

Girton Pits - Great Northern Diver [Juv, still present on the A1133 Pit].

RSPB Langford Lowfields - 7 Eurasian White-fronted Geese [found on Phase 2 this morning, then flew to fields West of the reserve]. Also 4 Oystercatcher [Phase 2], singing Cetti's Warbler and calling Water Rail.

Holme Pierrepont - 24 Whooper Swan [on the A52 pit, 15:00 - 15:20 at least]. Also 4 Red-crested Pochard.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 25+ Whooper Swan [Clayworth Common]. Also 12 Goosander, 1+ Short-eared Owl, 2 Ringed Plover, 5 Ruff and Stonechat [Chainbridge area].

Sturton-le-Steeple - 120 Pink-footed Geese [over North/West, 11:17].

Scrooby - Short-eared Owl [on posts by the River Ryton, late afternoon. Please park sensibly on Station Road, do not block access at the Station House].

Gringley Carr - Marsh Harrier [male, towards Idle Stop], 1 Corn Bunting and 56 Fieldfare this afternoon.

Newington - Dunlin, 16 Common Redshank and 12 Shelduck [Hagg Lane Flash].

Sutton -in-Ashfield - Red Kite [drifting North/East over Sutton Lawn, towards Kings Mill Reservoir, 11.06].

Netherfield Lagoons - 2 Stonechat, still and Chiffchaff [by the side of the path leading to the entrance bridge, 16:00].

Cotham - 1w Glaucous Gull [on the landfill this afternoon].

South Muskham - Smew [redhead, late afternoon at least, on the largest of the A1 Pits]. Also adult Mediterranean Gull and 3 Yellow-legged Gull [in the gull roost] and 15 Goldeneye.

Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint - Goshawk [13:00].

Holme Pierrepont - Smew [redhead, Skylarks Works Pond. Hiding until 12.30, when it emerged from reeds-SW corner. Also Yellow-legged Gull and Oystercatcher [Blotts Pit].

Eakring - Garganey [drk, still present on Eakring Flash]. Also 2 Common Shelduck.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 3 Bewick's and 33 Whooper Swan [Clayworth Common, this morning], 2 Stonechat [along the river, 100m south of neatholme lane] and Peregrine.

Skegby Trail - Red Kite [flew over to the south-east, 11:00] Also c25 Redwing, c20 Fieldfare and 2 Yellowhammer.

Meden vale - Chiffchaff [Meden Vale Bottoms NR].

Rufford Country Park - 3 Hawfinch [in flight near main car-park at 09:00]. Also 11 Goosander and Kingfisher.

Girton Pits - Great Norther Diver [Juv, still on the A1133 Pit, 14:15 at least] and 2 Eurasian White-fronted Geese [still in the field at the end of the Sailing Club access road, early afternoon].

Collingham Pits - 7 Curlew, Green Sandpiper and Common Redshank [on silt lagoon, this morning].

Besthorpe NWT - 3 Common Redshank [Mons Pool].

Gringley Carr - 30+ Tree Sparrow and 100+ fieldfare.

Holme Pierrepont - Smew [redhead, still on Works Pond, 10:20].

Mapperley - Raven [over Duncan Macmillan House, heading south west, 10:00].

Rufford Country Park - 2 Ring-necked Parakeet [flew over calling this morning]. Also 3+ Hawfinch [Lime Tree Avenue, near the Abbey 08:20 to 08:30] and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker [drilling close to the beech wood glade, some 50 metres before the Ice House, 09:30].

Kings Mill Reservoir - 1w Little Gull and 2w Caspian Gull [in the gull roost, this evening].

Wollaton Park - Raven [being mobbed by Jackdaws near the Parkside entrance, 15:00].

Newington - 15 Common Redshank, 67 Teal, 156 Wigeon and 5 Shelduck [HaggLane Flash].

Rufford Country Park - 2 Ring-necked Parakeet [14:30 but no further details]. Also 1 Hawfinch [Lime Tree Avenue, near the Abbey 10:30]

Budby Common - 20 Brambling [in a mixed flock of finches, largely chaffinch, around the usual southern edge of the corn Stubble Field, this morning]. Also a good sized flock of yellowhammer [in the field north of the corn stubble field] and c10 Lesser Redpoll [south east apex of the triangle].
