Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

"Records of certain sensitive species may not appear here during the breeding season, unless publicised by site managers or where records relate to what are likely to be passage migrants or wandering non-breeding individuals rather than breeders. Species that this generally applies to include (but are not necessarily limited to): Avocet, Bearded Tit, Bittern, Black-necked Grebe, Cetti's Warbler, Garganey. Goshawk (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Honey-buzzard (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull, Nightingale, Peregrine (except for Nottingham City Centre), Raven, Red Kite and Woodlark (except from Budby Heath). For a range of other species, we will not include specific breeding information - this includes Barn Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Little Ringed Plover, Nightjar, Turtle Dove and Willow Tit. Nevertheless, please submit your sightings anyway."

Holme Pierrepont - Bittern [flew low over north end of Blott’s Pit 10:20], Hobby [hawking dragonflies over wader scrape, 11:00], 2 Common Sandpiper [one Blotts Pit and a second on the Ski Tow Lake, this morning].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Wood Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, 5 Green Sandpiper, 2-3 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Garganey, c.10 Swift [Clifton Pit, this Morning] 2 Juv Black Tern [Clifton Pit, 17:40 at least], 2 Mediterranean Gull [Juvs/moulting into 1w, 17:58 and a second 19:25, Clifton Pit].

East Leake GP's - 2 Green Sandpiper , 1 juv Common Sandpiper , Spotted Flycatcher and Hobby.

Finningley GP's - Greenshank [briefly then flew South], 6 Juv Yellow Wagtail.

Idle Washlands - Osprey [over Gainsborough Road river bridge flying North towards Newington floods, 13:20], Juv Black-tailed Godwit, Green Sandpiper, Common Redshank and 4 Common Snipe [Hagg Lane Flash, 17:00].

Rise Park - 2 Raven [flew over, "cronking" this afternoon].

Thrumpton - Common Redstart [male, still present in the hedgerow SK516322 early afternoon at least]. Also Northern Wheatear.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Juv Wood Sandpiper, Juv Black Tern, 4 Green Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper [all Clifton Pit up to 17:45 at least], 14 Shoveler [moving between Tween and Clifton Pit], 10 Common Pochard [Clifton Pit], c.100 Swift [feeding over tree covered areas in strong winds, late evening] and c.180 Swallow [feeding low over Clifton pit].

Idle Washlands - Juv Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Common Redshank, 11 Common Snipe, 2 Little Egret and 25 Teal, 16:00]

Tithby - Great White Egret [flying low S/W, at the bridge over the River Smite near Wiverton Hall, 19:50].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Wood Sandpiper [Juv, still present on Clifton Pit, late morning at least], 8 Black-tailed Godwit [Clifton Pit, 08:40, with 7 still present, 17:20], Black Tern [Juv, still Clifton Pit]. Also 3 Raven, Hobby and 2 Peregrine [Juv and adult male, from Tower hide 18:00].

Hickling - Peregrine [circling low over Hickling church and village, 17:15].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Juv Wood Sandpiper, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper and Juv Black Tern [Clifton Pit, 16:15 at least], Spotted Flycatcher [observation point past Tower Hide, 08:40].

Wednesday 16th August

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Wood Sandpiper [Juv, still present on Clifton Pit], 2 Garganey [still Ridge and Furrow/Clifton Pit, 07:50]. Also Juv Black Tern, Common Sandpiper, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Greenshank [Clifton Pit, this evening].

Sibthorpe - Quail [male singing from weedy field 12:53, where the Car Dyke passes under Deadwong Lane/Lineham Lane, SK764465].
