Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

Records of certain species will not appear here during the breeding season - but please send in your reports regardless.

Holme Pierrepont - Spoonbill [Blotts Pit, 16:45 to 19:00 at least] also 2 Black Tern [Blotts Pit ] and 91 Ringed Plover [5 grounded on Blotts and flock of 68 that circled then moved off North, followed by a further 18 from the south].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] Lound Bird Club's 25th year celebration 'BIG BIRD DAY' event. Joint species total was 101 birds with highlights being: Osprey, 5 Wood Sandpiper, Bittern, Mandarin, Common Redstart. 2 Garganey, 2 Turnstone, 2 Marsh Harrier, 3 Hobby and Spotted Flycatcher. Idle Valley Nature Reserve [Lound] – 5 Black Tern Neatholme Scrape, 2 birds 12:00 then later 5 birds were present at 14:50], Wood Sandpiper [for majority of the day but wasn't present early evening, Tiln North Restoration Area] also Common Sandpiper and 3 Ringed Plover. Spotted Redshank [Neatholme Scrape, flew south heard calling three times 10:40], Greenshank and 14 Little Grebe [Clayworth Common, Conservation Lake], Whimbrel [flew west and north east, Neatholme Scrape] also 2 Ruff, 7-14 Dunlin. Black-tailed Godwit [for just 5 minutes Chainbridge NR Scrape,then south], 6 Ruff, Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Common Snipe and 3 Ringed Plover [Neatholme Fen]. 21 Common Snipe [Chainbridge NR Scrape, including 11 flew south west, 7 moved north east and 3 were grounded] plus 4 Yellow Wagtail, 12 Ringed Plover flew in late evening. 8 Green Sandpiper and 3 Common Sandpiper [Neatholme Pit].

Annesley & Newstead Country Park [Annesley Pit Top] - 2 Whimbrel [thru, this morning].

Newington - Pectoral Sandpiper and Great White Egret [Hagg Lane Flash, 08:15 at least].

Thursday 13th August

Newington [Hagg Lane Flash] - Pectoral Sandpiper [Juvenile, originally found on Newington Flash, York's, just after midday, then relocated on Hagg Lane Flash, 13:10 to 16:30 at least], Great White Egret [showing very well 15:10, then flew back onto Newington Floods, Yorks 16:30] also 22 Ruff, 3 Dunlin, 7 Ringed Plover, 7 Common Snipe, 5 Yellow Wagtail and 15 Little Egret.

RSPB Langford Lowfields - Greenshank and Green Sandpiper [on Phase 1], also a party of swifts trickling through.

Clipstone Forest - 2 Green Sandpiper [on muddy stream in desert area].

Teversal Trail - Willow Tit.

Holme Pierrepont - Common Sandpiper and Little Egret [Blotts Pit, midday].

Kilvington Lakes - 1 Common Snipe, 1 Dunlin and 5 Yellow-legged Gull.

Netherfield Lagoons - Bittern [flew across the Slurry lagoon, along the reeds in front of the seat, 09:30].

Idle Valley Nature Reserve [Lound] Wood Sandpiper [Chainbridge Scrape, 09:20], Black Tern [Neatholme Scrape, present from 14:20 to 18:00 at least], also 10 Dunlin and 2 Green Sandpiper. 5 Green Sandpiper [Neatholme Pit], Yellow-legged Gull [sub-adult], Ruff, Greenshank and 6 Common Tern [Neatholme Fen], Greenshank [Tiln North Restoration Area] and 4 Little Egret, female Mandarin Duck and 4 Yellow Wagtail [Chainbridge NR Scrape].

Cotham Flash - Great White Egret [non-breeding adult, 07:00 then flew South] also 1 Green Sandpiper.

Southwell - Firecrest [Late news from Monday, singing male reported from Reg Taylor's Garden Centre].

Wednesday 12th August

Rufford Pit Top - 1 Nightjar [feeding around hill, 22:00].

Idle Valley Nature Reserve [Lound] – 2 Common Redstart [including 1 juvenile 1w male] , adult Yellow-legged Gull, 1 Ruff, 1 Common Redshank, 2 Little Egret, 3 Green Sandpiper and 2 Turtle Dove [Neatholme Fen], 2 Dunlin [Neatholme Scrape], 4 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper and Marsh Harrier [Neatholme Pit]. 16:00 to 19:30 visit.

Newington - Great White Egret [showing well on Hagg Lane Flash this morning] also 15 Little Egrets, 3 Ruff and a Green Sandpiper.

Tuesday 11th August

Holme Pierrepont - 3 Green Sandpiper [Blotts Pit, this evening].

Collingham - Hobby [over the River Trent, late afternoon].

RSPB Langford Lowfields - Marsh Harrier [over Phase 2, looking south from the viewing screen this afternoon].

Spalford Pit - 44 Lesser-black Backed Gul, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper and 2 Red-crested Pochard.

The Welbeck Estate - 2 Spotted flycatcher, 6 Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff [on the Deer Park, this afternoon].

Idle Valley Nature Reserve [Lound] – 4+ Ruff, 2 Greenshank, 1 Common Redshank, 50+ Larger Gulls [Neatholme Fen], 4 Common Sandpiper, 1 Green Sandpiper, 3 Dunlin, 2 Common Snipe [Neatholme Scrape], 4 Green Sandpiper [Neatholme Pit], Common Redstart [Neatholme Lane], 1 Hobby [Tiln North Restoration], 2 Ruff, 1 Sparrow-hawk [Chainbridge Scrape], 11:30 to 15:30 visit.

Arnold - Red Kite [flew high South/West over Parry Way, 15:45].

Kingsmill Reservoir - Black-tailed Godwit [1, still in the South/West corner].

Newington - Great White Egret [flew over Hagg Lane Flash 11:00, before settling on Newington Floods, South York's] also 2 Dunlin, Common Sandpiper and 11 Little Egret 10:00.

Idle Valley Nature Reserve [Lound]Turtle Dove and Yellow-legged Gull [this morning].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Garganey [eclipsed drk], Common Sandpiper, 2 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Gull, 2 Common Snipe and 5 Little Egret [all Clifton Pit this morning]

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 3 Black-tailed Godwit [Clifton Pit, 07:30], Yellow-legged Gull [adult on Tween, 20:15], 2 Common Sandpiper [Clifton Pit] and 7 Little Egret.

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Common Scoter [A52 Pit, drk and female 07:30 - 18:15 at least] also Willow Tit [singing and showing regularly by the middle screens at Blotts Pit this morning].

Kingsmill Reservoir - 7 Black-tailed Godwit [in the South/West corner 17:40].

Barton-in-Fabis - Turtle Dove [showing well from the Churchyard, 07:30].

Friday 7th August

Bulwell - Dipper [Juvenile, present all day favouring the stretch of river between the green bridge to the children’s play park and the Highbury Vale stone bridge] also 3 Grey Wagtail [adult and 2 Juv's].

Besthorpe NWT - Willow Tit [on the south side of Mons Pool, this afternoon].

Barton-in-Fabis - Turtle Dove [still present purring away on conifer in walled garden today at 14:15].

Kingsmill Reservoir - Black-tailed Godwit [still in the South/West corner late afternoon] also Common Sandpiper.

Bulwell - Dipper [Juvenile, on the River Leen next to the park 18:51, then flew upstream but relocated under stone bridge near to Wilkos. Present since 23rd July].

Holme Pierrepont - 3 Green Sandpiper [Blotts Pit, this morning 10:35].

Tuesday 4th August

Hoveringham - Black Stork [Approached the Sailing Lake in steady flight from the North-East before turning and circling. It gained height and then moved off to the North until lost from view, 11:00 until 11:12].

Holme Pierrepont - adult Yellow-legged Gull and Green Sandpiper [Blotts this evening].

Barton-in-Fabis - Turtle Dove [showed briefly in the walled garden this evening, 20:10].

Beeston - Raven [calling over Beeston, 17:30].

Netherfield Lagoons - 2 Bittern [single flew across the Slurry Lagoon, 12:15 and 2 seen together having a dispute in the far corner of the reed-bed], 2 Marsh Harrier [Juvenile, over the Slurry Lagoon on and off all morning and female briefly 14:15].

Holme Pierrepont - Wood Sandpiper and Ruff [Blotts Pit 10:45, then flew high south 11:12] also Green Sandpiper.
